Do Not Pay the Ticket Without Reading This First

When you receive a speeding ticket in North Carolina, paying it online might seem like the easiest option. But paying a ticket is the same as pleading guilty — and that guilty plea comes with consequences most drivers do not expect.

What Happens When You Pay a NC Speeding Ticket

The moment you pay, you are convicted. That conviction triggers two separate point systems:

  • DMV license points — tracked by NCDMV. Accumulate 12 points in 3 years and your license is suspended.
  • Insurance points (SDIP) — tracked by your insurance company. These drive up your premium — sometimes by 40-80% — for up to five years under 2025 law changes.

Common Options an Attorney Can Pursue

Improper Equipment

A reduction to improper equipment means the charge becomes a non-moving violation — no license points, minimal insurance impact. This is available in most NC counties for routine speeding cases with a clean record.

Prayer for Judgment Continued (PJC)

A PJC defers the judgment — no conviction is entered. One PJC per household every five years avoids insurance points. Judges must agree to grant one, and CDL holders are not protected by PJCs under federal law.

Speed Reduction

Reducing from 80+ mph (misdemeanor) to 79 mph (infraction) removes the criminal charge and significantly lowers the point and insurance impact.

When It Becomes a Misdemeanor

Speeding becomes a criminal misdemeanor in North Carolina when you exceed 80 mph regardless of the posted limit, or when you exceed the limit by 15+ mph in a 55+ mph zone. A misdemeanor conviction goes on your criminal record — not just your driving record.

What to Do Right Now

Do not pay the ticket before speaking with an attorney. In many cases, the cost of legal representation is far less than the long-term insurance increase from a conviction.
